TGIF, everybody!
Really, I just have three thoughts/housekeeping matters I thought I’d post here before I get on with a weekend that will include some housekeeping in my real house, possibly a trip to the movies, and some reading for this class:
First, just to remind everyone here about readings for next week:
- Read and discuss “Tales from the Public Domain,” a comic by Keith Aoki, James Boyle, and Jennifer Jenkins
- Read and discuss “‘Fair Use,’ Copyright Law, and the Composition Teacher,” Martine Courant Rife in Originality, Imitation, and Plagiarism: Teaching Writing in the Digital Age.
- Read and discuss “Cloud Gate: Challenging Reproducibility, Jeff Ward in Originality, Imitation, and Plagiarism: Teaching Writing in the Digital Age.
Begin by Wednesday and complete by Friday:
- Read and discuss “Reviewing the Author-Function in the Age of Wikipedia,” Amit Ray and Erhardt Graeff in Originality, Imitation, and Plagiarism: Teaching Writing in the Digital Age.
- Read and discuss “Framing Plagiarism,” Linda Adler-Kassner, Chris M. Anson, and Rebecca Moore Howard in Originality, Imitation, and Plagiarism: Teaching Writing in the Digital Age.
- Read and discuss Danielle DeVoss and Annette C. Rosati, “‘It wasn’t me, was it?’ Plagiarism and the Web.” PDF | Link
It’s a fascinating and complex topic, but I do like these readings and think they’re useful, accessible, and even kind of fun (a comic book! Yea!).
Second, my plan is to finally give you comments on your “invent your own technology” projects and to read through your blogs. I have no decent excuse, but let’s just say that in the last two weeks, I’ve had to deal with an unusual amount of time-consuming and largely unplanned non-teaching kind of stuff. I’d like to see that quiet down a bit….
Third, I want to give everyone a “heads up” about February 12. As you will note on the schedule, by that date, you need to have a “topic proposal blog entry” posted. We can talk more about this as we get closer, but the basic premise is that you will have a short essay in which you explain what you are going to do your research about, why, what you see as the point you are trying to make, etc. I am always happy and able to meet with people to talk about ideas, and I will give everyone some feedback on what they’ve done so far (see point #2).
Also either February 12 or 11, I will set up an informal meeting and tour of the EMU Halle library, both the physical facility and the resources you can use to look stuff up. I have always been somewhat surprised about graduate students who don’t really use the Halle library, so I have always tried to extend opportunities to gently nudge folks into the building and onto the databases. You’d be surprised how much easier your research will be.
Have a good weekend, everybody!
Thanks for offering a library tour. Although I am certainly aware of libraries, having spent many hours in UM-Dbn’s, I am NOT familiar with Eastern’s. Therefore I would welcome the tour.
one more thing–can it be after 330?
I am with Judy. I would like to go through tour but need to have it as late as possible on the 11 or 12. Also please let us know ASAP when you have set day and time so I can schedule time off work. Thanks.
On that Thursday, February 11, I could do something at 7 pm or so; what do people think of that?
February 11 works infinitely better than February 12 for me! I work until 5pm on Thursdays, so 7pm would work out really well, but if people need to meet earlier, I can try leave early. Hope you’re all enjoying the weekend, despite the cold!
That works for me, I teach until 5:50 in Livonia and would be heading back to campus, bout half hour away.
February 11 is definitely best for me. I have a crazy day on February 12 with some big faculty meetings at work– one which will last until 5:30 or 6:00. On the 11th, however, Ican do anytime after 6:00– since I can get to Ypsi from U-M by that time. (Oh, the horrors of Washtenaw Ave. at rush hour!) I don’t want to miss another face-to-face class meeting and I would love to learn about Eastern’s library. I have, honestly, never been in there and I am only two terms away from graduating!
Since I am starting my thesis this summer, it might be good for me to go.
I don’t come to campus on Thursdays, but I have practically lived at Halle for years now. I spend hours at a time in there researching and reading and am actually heading up there in a bit to grab about 30 more books to add to my own stacks
I’m with Angie, Halle is a pretty important part of my life…I’d be interested in going because you can always learn something new, but don’t make any schedule changes on my account.
I think I’m aiming for Thursday, February 11, at 7 pm. I’ll keep you all posted as the plan comes together.
Thursday night sounds like a time for me too.
Thursday seems to be good for me–as long as we don’t have 10 inches of snow. Friday can’t work for me–my husband’s Christmas present was tickets to Florida for the 2 of us. Our flight leaves Friday night and we return Tuesday night. (Don’t worry, we have a hotel with Wi-Fi and the computer will be coming too!)
