Research projects: don’t forget to report/review!

I took a few moments just now to read through everyone’s research project updates (that is, everyone that posted them–more on that in a second) and made some comments.  Go and check ‘em out!  A few general thoughts after the “continued” part:

  • I like what I saw, to be honest.  I can see people thinking through their research, taking their projects in different directions based on what they found, struggling with it (hey, that’s part of the process, so the struggle is a good thing), being happy with it (that too is part of the process), thinking big, etc.  Good stuff!  However….
  • Too many of you haven’t done this yet! What worries me about this is this:  if you are having a hard time coming up with a brief (200-300) update that simply answers the question “how’s the research project going?” then that signals to me as a teacher that there might be something wrong. Now, if I’m wrong about that, if it’s just a matter of having not gotten around to it yet, then do post this asap, pretty please. However, if it isn’t just a matter of that– that is, if you are really having some problems– for God’s sake, let me know.  The last thing you want to do at this stage is “ignore it and hope it goes away.”  That rarely is an effective strategy.
  • Once you post yours (or now that you have), how about you comment on three or so of your colleagues’ updates?  This is a good thing because it will give you a chance to give each other feedback, and also, in the process of giving each other feedback, you will all (hopefully/in theory) get some ideas on how you too can improve your own proposal.

Give it a try!  It’ll be fun!

Dave I was going to read yours but I dont know which one it is…..

      • Dave says

It’s the page listed as Research Project Midterm Progress.

Mine was posted under my March 9 posting on the home page of my blog, but I don’t see a response….did I put it in there in a wrong format or something?

I have commented on all who have posted as of 12:30 on Friday. I just wanted to read what everyone was working on.

I’m really glad that we had to do this. (Glad about an assignment? What?!) It allowed me to see little snipets of where my classmates are and the topics they are doing because, quite frankly, I didn’t read everyone’s research proposals :) And, wow! The topics sure are interesting. I am glad that we have to post everything to our blogs because it will then allow me to go back and see what the final product and conclusions are.

Good job and good luck, everyone! With only a couple weeks left it seems like way too much to think about… but we can do it!! (And keep our sanity? We’ll see.)

Prof Krause: quick question! On the research project page, it says that we need to post a “draft” of our project by April 9 for peer review. Can you give us a heads up on how this will work? Thanks much! :-)

  8. Steve K. says

Basically, it’s peer review not unlike the kind of thing that’s common in classes like first year writing. Some time before April 9, I’ll divide you into groups of 3 or 4. Each of you will post a draft of your project to your blog no later than the end of the day on Friday, April 9. Then, I will expect each of you to comment on your peers’ drafts no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, April 14.

The final version of the project (that is, whatever it is you do after revisions from your peers, etc.) is due on Friday, April 16. That April 16 deadline date is really important because I absolutely, positively have to have the final version of your project so that I can give you the kind of detailed comments I want to give you during finals week, while you’re working on your final.

    Hope that makes some sense….

    • Carrie says

Yep! Makes sense to me! Thanks again for the info. Hopefully most of us can do our peer reviews over the weekend, so we can have the rest of the week to finish up our respective projects.

The end is in sight, everyone! We can make it! :-)

I dont think I got any comments on my Research project post on my blog. I did everyones…..just wondering.

    • Carrie says

Cristin, I looked at your blog but didn’t know which post was your research update. If you tell me what it’s called, I’ll write you some comments today. :-)
