I bought this book and after hearing this really feel I need to read this. I want to use more technology in my classes and think this will really help me here. I like the images you use here as well. This was engaging and good, but i want to see you more here…..A lot of good information and shows that if teachers want to engage their students they need to reach them where they are at. I like what you say about not invading their lives. This book is maybe for those who are against technology and using it in their classroom.

It sounds like a super practical, hands-on type of book! This is great.

You want to see me more? No way, lol. I am NOT a fan of being on camera if you couldn’t tell :-) It is a good book though, helpful in many ways but like I said in my review, a little amateur for what we need after taking this class.

Really well done, Angie. I especially liked your point about having a purpose when we integrate technology into our classrooms. I think sometimes it’s all about the “neat” factor which doesn’t necessarily enhance anything. I’m always willing to say that more writing is always better than less. But, I don’t think it necessarily applies to technology in the classroom… (ie. more technology is not necessarily better than less).

Was that picture of you teaching, holding the ruler in your hand from when you were in Vegas? ;-) J/K, J/K. Good Job!

    • Angie says

That’s exactly right Dave, more technology isn’t better. We can’t use it for the sake of using technology, like the author points out, we need to make sure we have a specific purpose and outcome at all times.

And you’re not that funny :-)

Great job Angie! Your use of visuals is really inspiring. I really liked your interpretation of literacy, that it is a never ending problem with no solution. This was a very enjoyable review:-)

  4. Renee says

Wow Angie!! You really have a knack for reviews!!! The visuals were right on!!!! Your voice is perfectly clear and the tone is perfect. It was like a PBS special on literacy– personal experiences and interpretations on literacy.

    • Angie says

Thank you!!! I spent quite a bit of time lining up my voice recordings to the pictures, thanks for noticing!!!

Angie, great job. Nice pictures to go with your text. I totally agree with you concerning what makes a person literate. We have to define the word into a broader sense than just reading and writing. There are so many genres out there, so what makes a student literate? I can’t read a blue print of an engineer— does that make me illerate? I too feel by taking this class especially online, that I have gained so much understanding about the tech tools that need to be addressed in the classroom. Great Job

This book sounded like a great introduction to technology in the classroom and how students use it in their lives today. I do agree that it seems to repeat a lot of what we discussed in class and may be a little much in trying to get teachers to incorporate these new forms in their teaching, simply because the students are familiar with them. I think it still seems like something interesting to check out, but perhaps would be more for someone who hasn’t taken a class on modern-day literacy but still wants to be educated about it?

I do like how she goes over how the idea of literacy must be re-examined. My favorite was the comment on how if literacy means that a person needs to know how to read and write, what is it that they must be able to read and write? That is the most appropriate question when looking at the many, many literacy outlets available today. We have definitely moved way beyond the page and the pencil. So, hooray for that insight.

Angie! This is so well done! I agree with others: your visuals are phenomenal, and I think you get the pace of the video just right. Your critique is well integrated with your synopsis, too. I think your connection to the creepy treehouse effect make a lot of sense, and while it’s good that Braun discusses how to use many different new media in teaching, I think you’re right when you say that using ALL of them would be overkill. Teens should be able to have their own spaces, absolutely.

And the lolcats, oh my goodness!!!! I loves them. ;-)

    • Angie says

I had never seen the LOL cats and for almost every Google image I came across there was at least one that popped up in the search engine! I LOVE the one with the “I baked you some cookies but I eated them” CRACKS me up!!!! And thanks for the nice comments :-)

Like everyone else, I too thought you did a great job with this.

What’s interesting though is that a number of people after watching your review (and, I assume, the part where you say that it’s really not as advanced as the stuff we’ve been talking about in this class) want a copy of this book for themselves. I guess there’s enough here and enough of a desire for “a review” that the book is potentially useful.

    • Angie says

Thank you! And I know, I’m amazed that even though I said you don’t need this book a lot of people want it, lol. It was helpful and I really really did enjoy it, but still think the examples of how to incorporate things is a bit below where we’re at and what we’d use in our classrooms. Like a texting homework hotline or a wiki page to create definitions, I don’t see many of the teachers in this class using that in the 120/121 classes. Maybe I’m wrong though.

  9. Cristin says

Im thinking about the idea of how to use technology better, and to use some of it at all.

    • Angie says

I’m not sure she really made me feel like I knew how to use technology *better* though. She had some good introductory ideas, but that’s about all… I feel like since you use technology and have such a strong sense what it is and how to use it, you could find another text to be much more helpful. IDK though…

  10. Cristin says

I bought the book so i feel like i have to read it….LOL….but who knows, seems like it might be a quick read.
