“Spring” “Break,” Wiki comments, and one last optional meeting (maybe?)

For various religious/public institution readings, we’re celebrating “spring break” instead of Easter this Friday/weekend, and for various timing issues we’re all familiar with, the “break” is but one day.  Always remember that one of the good things about EMU is we are going to be done by the end of the month.  Yea!

In any event, I’m planning on having a bit of a “working vacation” this weekend, doing some school stuff but doing a lot of gardening/outdoor stuff too.  Before I head into that time proper, here’s some housekeeping/class announcements to keep in mind:

I have been skimming/reading through the wiki the last couple of days and I’ve made some comments on emuonline under the “Research Project” dropbox entry on the gradebook.  Let me know if you need help finding it, though I should point out that I’m only about  half-way through (I should finish by Sunday) and I really don’t have a lot to say.  It seems to me that most of you clearly have the idea here, so my comments are along the lines of “good job– interesting entries!  Keep up the good work!”  I guess I would make three “global” comments that everyone might want to consider:

  • If you have a bunch of books and print/scholarly journals as part of the first 10 entries, why not include some web-based and less scholarly oriented material for the second part of the annotated bibliography?  And vice-versa?  In other words, strive for a little variety with your resources.  Oh, and don’t forget:  the second 10 entries are due by April 7!
  • Watch the dates.  One of the blessings and curses of this specialization in terms of scholarship is that stuff that is only 5 years old on some topics is way too old.  I mean, YouTube didn’t exist 5 years ago (which is freaky to think about, obviously), so it’s kind of hard to use an article from 2004 about incorporating video into teaching, right?
  • Feel free to use the class wiki as a research resource.  There’s a lot of stuff up there, so why not do a “search” for some key terms and see what turns up?  One of your classmates might have an awesome resource/article to share with you!

But again, I think people are totally on the right path here.  I’m looking forward to reading these projects, too.  Speaking of which….

I’d like to propose one last optional but potentially useful informal class meeting a week from today on April 9.  See the doodle calendar and vote for all the times that work for you– I have 4 pm, 5 pm, or 6 pm– or, if none of these times work for you, then select that.  Let me also offer a reminder about getting help with your project:  I am always happy to meet with you to talk about/coach you through your project, and I have a pretty flexible schedule, too! So if want help/want to talk but can’t/won’t go to The Corner, let me know and we’ll make an appointment.

Happy weekend, everyone!

So how much of a gardener are you? Is it too early to uncover those precious rose bushes? Seems like it warmed real fast. Is it okay to uncover?

Trying to get a jump on things myself, I have 2 questions:

One–if we finish our annotated bib but still find some other resources, is it alright to add them to our paper when we finish it?

Second, I could only find one page of the “Converging the ASsumptions…” paper, isn’t there supposed to be more?
      Thanks!
      Happy Bunny Day!

Just a few answers (in reverse!) as I slowly get back into the idea that I’m not really on break:

    * Judy, scroll to the bottom of that first page and you’ll see the links that will start getting you into the hypertext.

    * The answer to the first question is “yes.” The basic requirement though is that you should have an annotated bib entry for all of the materials/articles you include in your research project.

    * My gardening wasn’t as productive as I had planned in part because I bought an iPad and in part because I spent a lot of nice time hanging out with family and friends, too. But more on that front is coming soon.
